Overview
THE PROGRAM
In this pioneering two-parter, one of the most crucial issues law enforcement officers will ever have to deal—IS dealt with as never before. No, it’s not that many challenges of the street and putting cuffs on criminals or putting a bite on crime. It’s the innumerable challenges all officers will encounter in their offices, precincts, districts, stations or hq’s. Every veteran officer told us that surviving toxic supervisors or bosses at the top far and away outweighed any other reason the officers had for resigning, retiring, moving to another agency or, simply, changing careers entirely. So, it is with the utmost in good intentions for all in the law enforcement ‘food chain’ to benefit from this program. The officers we selected have more than 100 years of law enforcement experience, and each one is highly-respected not only for his or her work on the job but also what he or she has done and continues to do for law enforcement in their ‘retirement’.
SPECIFIC PROGRAM CONTENT
What better way to start a program dealing with toxic work environments in law enforcement than body cam footage of an allegedly drunk NJ police chief approaching one of his sergeants who was working a dui wreck? Instead of supporting the sergeant or asking if he could assist in any way, he begins berating the sgt. for a uniform shirt he is wearing. This becomes a heated confrontation with the chief suspending the sergeant on the spot and demanding he come to his office. You’ll see for yourself and then hear from our ITLOD technical advisors who chime in to say in commonality this was an egregious misuse of power by the chief. And, they elaborate on their own experiences related to toxic work environments, what they ultimately did when they found themselves in such situations, and what YOU, too, can do faced with similar challenges.
